Brief Abstract

The lecture will cover the history of the research and activities of CENPARMI (Centre for Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence) at Concordia University in Canada. It will begin with the research of Prof. Suen on transistor circuits in 1966 and a computerized reading machine for the blind in 1968, followed by handwriting recognition and font analysis. Prof. Suen will also summarize the foundations of international conferences on Document Analysis and Recognition, and Handwriting Recognition in 1990-1991, and the editing of various journals related to pattern recognition. In addition, He will talk about his research on Chinese words and sounds, his roles in the international Chinese Language Computer Society, and lectures given at numerous Chinese universities and research institutes in the past 4 decades.
