Abstract: Social network analysis and graph analytics are closely related fields, yet they have developed with different emphases—interpretability and domain insight on one side, scalability and algorithmic generality on the other. In this keynote, I explore the connections between the two, examining how graph analytic techniques can support the study of social structures, and how problems from social network analysis can inspire new challenges for graph analytics research. Drawing on both foundational concepts and real-world examples, the talk reflects on opportunities for mutual enrichment and outlines possible directions for deeper integration.
Bio: M. Tamer Özsu is a University Professor at Cheriton School of Computer Science at University of Waterloo. His research focuses on data science, with particular emphasis on large-scale data management, distributed systems, and non-relational data platforms. He is the author/co-author of three books and co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Database Systems, with two more books in production. He has also held several senior academic leadership positions, including Director of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Mathematics, and Co-Director of the Faculty of Mathematics Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Program at the University of Waterloo. Professor Özsu is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Balsillie School of International Affairs, and a Life Fellow of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). His contributions have been recognized through numerous honours, including the ACM Presidential Award, the IEEE Technical Committee on Data Engineering Education Award, the IEEE Innovation in Societal Infrastructure Award, the University of Waterloo Award of Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision, the CS-Can/Info-Can Lifetime Achievement Award, the ACM SIGMOD Contributions Award, and the ACM SIGMOD Test-of-Time Award.
